At a 25 April court hearing, Pastor Estefanos of a church in Hajj Abdallah, Gezira State, was sentenced to one month in prison, effective immediately. He was sentenced under Article 69 of the Public Order Law for “disturbing public peace.” The sentence is being appealed.
On 10 April a group of Islamic extremists attacked Christians praying in the church, injuring Pastor Estefanos and three women. The group had previously made complaints to local authorities about the church disturbing the public peace.
A police officer among the extremists filed the court case against Pastor Estefanos for disturbing public peace (Article 69 of the Public Order Law) and public nuisance (Article 77 of the Public Order Law). Pastor Estefanos was detained but later released on bail.
